Z-Release™
Suffering from Concussions, PTSD, ADD, ADHD, Epilepsy?
What is the Z-Release™?
The Z-Release™ is a soft tissue manipulation performed by a chiropractor for resetting the vagal nerve complex without drugs or surgery. Its goal is to activate the parasympathetic nervous system, in order to counter a sympathetic (“fight or flight”) nervous system that has become overstimulated; such an imbalance in the nervous system can cause many physical and mental health concerns, such as digestive issues, anxiety and migraines. We have already seen the Z-Release™ provide substantial improvement of symptoms in patients with issues such as concussions, PTSD, ADD, ADHD, epilepsy and others.
How does the Z-Release™ help?
We believe the Z-Release™ is useful for treating conditions such as PTSD and unrelated concussion symptoms, among other things, because it helps the body return to homeostasis, or balance.
Using the analogy of a car, the sympathetic nervous system is like the car’s gas pedal. It is called the “fight or flight” system because it helps get the body ready to react to perceived threats, but it is also activated in everyday situations to trigger our stress response and make us alert. On the other hand, the parasympathetic nervous system is like the brake pedal of the car. It is all about rest, relax and digest.
Continuing the car analogy, if the speed limit is 55 mph, the police will usually give you a range of speeds before they pull you over. If you go too slow, you might get pulled over. If you go too fast, you should expect to get pulled over. When your sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems are in balance, it is like being within the acceptable range of speeds for the speed limit – or homeostasis. Within the range where the cop won’t pull you over, your health, happiness, and performance are actually better – because of stress.
However, sometimes the accelerator or gas pedal can get stuck down in a sympathetic response, and you exceed acceptable range of speeds. This is like moving out of homeostasis to allostasis, when stress starts having a negative physiological impact on the body (for example, cortisol levels that don’t lower at night as much as healthy individuals) and can proceed to traumatic stress, such as when you are experiencing symptoms of concussions or PTSD.
When the sympathetic gas pedal is stuck down like this, traditional medicine might try to prescribe sedatives to help you hit the brakes and slow the body back to the speed limit. But sometimes the accelerator is so stuck that sedatives will not unstick that accelerator, and you’re flying down the highway at unsafe speeds. This is where we think the Z-Release™ is most useful.
By physically stimulating the vagus nerve, the Z-Release™ is intended to activate the parasympathetic nervous system, to tap the brakes and reset to homeostasis.
